Reis Magos
Reis Magos is a small village on the northern bank of the Mandovi River opposite Panjim (Panaji). Reis Magos is the location of a picturesque church (undergoing some restoration work) and an old Portuguese fort that is obviously not on the tourist trail, but has some Portuguese relics remaining.
Mukesh, my auto-rikshaw driver lived about three miles from Reis Magos and did not know the fort existed! I only knew it was there because I had made notes from travel books I had read before leaving the UK.
The fort appears to have been used, until recently, by a local govenment department (police or army) but is now becomming overgrown with creepers and brush-wood. To get to the fort you must accend a steep incline to the left of the church.
The climb was well worth the experience of going there - to look down the barrel of an old Portuguese cannon that could have fired a ball over the entrance to the harbour at Panjim and take in the views around the area.
