Goa is an Indian state on the western seaboard, lush and green during the tourist season, after the monsoons, from late October to April. Well known for the wide sandy beaches, once the jewel in the crown of Portugal's global empire. Goa is just right for the traveller seeking that winter sun, great seafood and interesting spicy cuisine.

Goa travel should be high on the itinerary of anyone looking to overwinter in the sun with a dash of local heritage there for the seeking.

The state, one of the smallest in India, has only 3,700 sq kms, a population of well under 2 million with a mixed economy of agriculture, mining, industry, fishing and tourism. The capital Panjim (Panaji) claims to be one of India's most beautiful cities, with the relics of its Portuguese past evident in some of the architecture, close to beaches and dotted with parks. The city has a hustle and bustle to be expected of a capital but has hidden charms. Search and you will find.

Transport, Travel and Communication to and around Goa:

Goa by air; Charter flights do go direct to Dabolim Airport close to the capital Panjim (Panaji). We would recommend AVOIDING 'Monarch Air' if at all possible. Goa is connected by Indian Airlines and JetAir flights to Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Delhi and Cochin. Recently, some International flights to Gulf countries have been introduced. Most smaller airline operators operate their flights to Mumbai, Delhi and other destinations.

Indian Railways; The Konkan Railway, connects Mumbai to Mangalore via costal Goa. The existing Vasco-Miraj line is converted into broadguage which now gives a direct rail link from Goa to New Delhi.

Roads; Goa is connected by road to all the major towns in India. Reliable and safe bus services are available to Mumbai, Pune , Bangalore, Mangalore and Kolhapur. We do not recommend hiring a vehicle without a local driver on your first visit to Goa (unless you have lots of spare uderwear!)
